Last night I read the girls the school lunch menu, as I do every night before school, to see if they want to bring lunch or buy. Cheese pizza or Chicken BBQ on bun were the choices. Big Sis said “Bring” and Little Sis say “Buy!!” (cheese pizza). So this morning I asked Big Sis what she wanted to bring for lunch and gave me a very definitive “Ramen noodles lunch.”
Ramen noodles aren’t something I’ve packed for them before, but Big Sis recently developed an affinity for them during a visit with grandparents over the holidays. Hobi (a nickname created by Big Sis short for “halabogee” which means “grandpa” in Korean) is a Ramen head. In other words, he loves Ramen. FYI: in our house, if you LOVE something, you’re automatically a “something” head.
Ok, not the healthiest, but I don’t do it every day and it’s not as bad if you don’t use the whole soup base packet or don’t drink all the broth if you do. Plus, I added an egg to it (by cracking a raw one into into the boiling noodles and stirred it up for an egg-drop-soup-like consistency) to give it some protein. Had to double check with Little Sis and told her Big Sis was getting Ramen “noo noo” for lunch today. She quickly blurted out as fast as she could “I WANT TO BRING!” So there it is. Little Sis, much like her Hobi, is Ramen noo noo head too.
Sorry, I neglected to get a pic of the actual Ramen noodles in all my haste this morning, but I did manage to snap this. It’s the brand I grew up with. I bag makes makes two kid-size servings.
And let me tell you, I ALMOST went as far as making up another batch just so I could include a pic and even went as far as boiling up some water but then came to my senses. It literally looks exactly the same each time and is rather boring looking! Here’s a pic I finally got around to taking another time anyway.
So here it is, their Ramen Noo Noo Lunch.
In this lunch:
- In the thermoses: Ramen noodles w/ eggs
- Mozzarella Cheese Its
- Red Seedless Grapes in Little Sis’ Lunch and Peeled Snacks’ Apple Crunchers
- Homemade Granola Bars
- Frosted Flower Sugar Cookies (My new companion post!)
- GoGo Squeeze Applesauce – Berry for Little Sis, Cinnamon for Big Sis

My girls would be drooling over this one for sure 🙂 As my grandmother, who lived to age 93, always said, "Everything in moderation."

This is still a far healthier lunch than found at 99% of public schools. Congrats for taking the time to pack it yourself, mom!

Actually, I DID read where a father was suing MSG for the wrongful death of his toddler. Oh wait, that was Madison Square Gardens. Carry on….

Actually, most ramen packets have enough MSG to kill a 2yo child! Per physician's desk reference. Educate yourself. Koyo brand is good though, and even has a soba version.

Perhaps you missed this in the second paragraph of my post reikifeet (lol, I just got that!):
"Ok, not the healthiest, but I don't do it every day and it's not as bad if you don't use the whole soup base packet or don't drink all the broth if you do."
Should have added that my girls eat MAYBE eat half a serving (at best) along with the reduced seasoning packet amount once or twice a month so I'm pretty sure I'm not killing my kids.
But thanks for the brand tip. I'll keep an eye out for it. I'm ALWAYS open to healthier alternatives. I'm actually working on a homemade version!

Clearly they don't have enough MSG to kill a child or we'd have read about toddlers dropping dead everywhere!

I am with Cristi! I will start watching the news more closely. 😉

MSG was used in almost EVERY single dish growing up in the Philippines in the 80's. We ate ramen noodles with rice a lot. Hmm. I'm still alive at thirstysomething years old. I'm not saying it's good for you. My mom stopped using MSG in cooking after we moved to the US.

What toddler has the tummy capacity for a whole cooked packet of ramen noodles in one go? Their stomachs are the size of one of their FISTS. The DRIED noodles are about 4-6 tummyfulls alone!
(FYI, a Google search that is sure to have FBI knocking on my door any second now shows no information on how much MSG it takes to kill a toddler. So without a link or scientific proof, regurgitating "facts" read somewhere sometime is not the same as being educated about an issue.)
